Institutionalizing Non-Ownership

Nagi’s Non-Ownership does not mean possessing nothing.

What it questions is the point at which land, knowledge, culture, foundational technologies, and similar shared conditions of life become powers through which a small number of people can dominate others.

What is protected

Private life, homes, memories, everyday belongings, and the personal dimension of creative work are protected around the individual’s choice and security.

What is opened

Educational resources, cultural archives, public infrastructure, natural resources, and foundational technologies are moved away from monopoly and opened to paths of use and inheritance.

Roles

The roles of use, care, inheritance, derivation, and circulation are distinguished, with responsibilities for explanation and care attached.

A steward is not a ruler. A steward temporarily takes responsibility for care and explanation, and prepares a condition in which something can be passed on.

Non-Ownership exists to loosen structures in which one person having too much makes it impossible for others to breathe.
