Play and Structure
Play and structure are not opposites.
Play is exploration that cannot be measured only by immediate usefulness. It is room for trying words and relations that have not yet been settled.
Structure exists to carry the possibilities that have been found into forms that can be shared with others, criticized later, and maintained.
- Play opens possibility.
- Structure makes selected possibilities shareable.
- When structure becomes too rigid, play opens room again.
The systems that support creation should not punish exploration. They should make responsibility and judgment easier to see, and allow people who use a system to participate in its revision.
Play is not a reason to treat unpaid experimentation as natural. When the time, access, care, or compensation needed for exploration is concentrated among only some people, the structure itself must be reviewed.
